I like to use multilevel lists linked to heading 1 to 9. Most times
that is enough, but I have a document with Appendices that requires
more than 9 levels. I don't suppose I can use two multilevel lists in
one document. 9 levels is enough for the docuemnt before Appendices.
In the Appendix, I need 3 levels of numbering such as 1,(a), (i). What
do I use to create the 3 levels?

You've run up against one of Word's limitations. You can have more than one
multilevel list, but you can't have more than 9 levels in a single list. As
a workaround, I believe there are ways to base styles in one list on styles
in another. But the conventional wisdom seems to be that if you need more
than 9 levels, you probably have too many levels for the reader to
comprehend anyway.

A suggestion for more levels was made a few years ago by Bruce Brown in the following thread:

18 levels of numbering without tears
