In using Word 97 the bullets appear on the screen but do
not print out on the page. i am using an hp 2100xi laser
printer. I have tried changing the driver over to an HP4
with no change in results. Thanks for any help.

Hi Craig:

Is this in one doc, or a general problem?
What kind of bulleting -- manual from Insert / Symbol,
toolbar or "toy" bullets, or List Bullet Styles?

I once had a problem with a 150-page doc, virtually every
paragraph bulleted, done with List Bullet Styles, arguably
the best way. Maybe 3000 bullets -- it printed them for
only half the doc, then quit. Had to print the doc in
halves, then the printer could handle it.

Characters from Insert / Symbol sometimes flake out
depending on how networks are configured and whatnot.

Cheers.

Thanks for the reply Alan.

It is a general problem, the bullets are getting put there
by going to <format> then to <bullets and numbering>. It
happens if it is a two hundred page doc or one sentence on
a page. Thanks for your help in advance.

Hi Craig:

This is a "Font" problem usually.

What is happening is that the bullet is being expressed in a Unicode font in
Word. However the printer does not have Unicode, so it substitutes a font
for the bullets. It's picking one it does not have, or the character
defined as the bullet does not exist in the font the printer does have.

Either way, It's never a good idea to use Format>Bullets and Numbering to
apply bullets or numbering to paragraphs. It tends to corrupt your
document.

The safe way is to define a STYLE containing the required bullet formatting,
then always apply the STYLE to the text and leave the format>Bullets and
Numbering command to those who enjoy pain.

To define a style, first select some bulleted paragraphs and apply the
built-in Word style "List Bullet" to them. If you have never used it
before, you may have to use Format>Style>Organiser and turn on "Show All
Styles" to see it. It's pre-defined in Word, but won't be visible unless
you have used it or turned on View All Styles.

Now just try printing that page before you go any further: it should be OK
because the default List Bullet style uses the Symbol font that everyone
has.

Now use Format>Style>Modify>Bullets and Numbering to set the style to your
tastes. Then use Format>Style>Modify>Paragraph to correct it. Due to a bug
in the design, the settings you make in Bullets and Numbering conflict with
some of the settings you make on the Paragraph dialogue.

Having done this, all you have to do to apply bullets is to select the
paragraphs and choose the List Bullet style.

I would stay away from the Bullets button on the toolbar too. It's supposed
to apply the last Bullets choice you made (which it does) but if you are
using more than one kind of bullets, you can never remember which one it's
going to apply.

Hope this Helps
