I have a word document that is properly Outline Numbered. When I attempt to
boldface the characters just after the numbering, the numbering also is
boldfaced. How can I prevent the boldface from effecting the numbering?

Display nonprinting characters (Ctrl+*), then select the paragraph mark and
unbold it.

Thanks for the reply - no luck.

The issue, however is not separated by paragraphs - both the numbering and
the title that need to be boldfaced are on the same line. as in...... '
numbering BOLDFACE TITLE FOR SECTION body of section' - all on one
line....

We have been working around it by selecting just a portion of the word
following numbering - thereby boldfacing the word in 2 parts. It's terribly
time consuming, although sometimes you can hilite the word and it does not
effect the numbering - maybe 50% of the time.

The point is that any formatting that is applied to more than half the text
in a paragraph will also be applied to the paragraph mark. The formatting of
the paragraph mark determines the formatting of the numbering. Even if you
select the text very carefully to omit the paragraph mark, it will still be
formatted. That's why you have to select the paragraph mark itself and
remove the formatting.
