I know how to insert figure captions throughout the document. And I can
insert cross-references, see Figure X.

But, how do i insert a cross-reference to a range of figures, such as
Figures 3-5. The default option is to insert caption and number, what
if i only want the number? it is not a choice for figure.

It's a bit fiddly, but here's how to do it:

1. Type "See Figures," and insert a cross-reference to Figure 3.

2. Insert an en dash, and then insert a cross reference to Figure 5. You
*must* take these two steps first, or the rest won't work. Inserting the
cross-references creates bookmarks around "Figure 3" and "Figure 5" in your
captions.

3. In the Figure 3 caption, select just the 3.

4. Go to Insert | Bookmark. Be sure "Hidden bookmarks" is checked. The
bookmark that is highlighted is the bookmark for "Figure 3," but you
currently have just "3" selected. Click Add. This moves the bookmark to
cover just the "3."

5. Repeat for Figure 5. When you update fields, you'll have "See Figures
3-5" as a cross-reference.

One of the features the Word MVPs have requested for a future version of
Word is a way to do this without all the fiddling.
