I have Headings 1 and 2 included in my table of contents. I have
modified the TOC 1 and TOC 2 styles to be bold for TOC 1 and NOT bold
for TOC 2. The page numbers are bold. Why is this? If I manually apply
direct formatting and update style to match, as soon as I update the
TOC it goes back to bold. If I unbold with direct formatting it will
stick until I update the entire table. If I only update the page
numbers, it will stay unbolded. Sometimes it will then bold the TOC 2
and unbold the page numbers.

I checked the document for direct formatting applied to styles and
cleared them all and reapplied the Heading styles.

I can't figure out why I'm getting bold page numbers in the TOC and
don't know where else to check.

I'm using Word 2007 on XP system

It's not entirely clear from your description whether all the page numbers
are bold, or just some of them, or various ones unpredictably, but note that
the page numbers for a given TOC level will always match the formatting of
that TOC style. So if your TOC 1 style is bold and TOC 2 not, then you
should expect the TOC 1 numbers to be bold and the TOC 2 numbers not. If you
are seeing all the numbers bold, then there is definitely something odd
going on.

For a start, I would suggest making sure that TOC 2 is not based on TOC 1
(or that it at least explicitly includes Not Bold as part of the
formatting). FWIW, although all the TOC styles are set to update
automatically, I find that this works more dependably for paragraph
formatting than for font formatting, so you may have better luck setting the
font formatting directly through the Modify Style dialog.

Hi Suzanne,

My TOC is showing ALL page numbers as bold while the main Heading is
unbolded. That is for the TOC 2 level. TOC 1 is bold headings and bold
leader dots and bold page number.

The TOC style is based on paragraph, not TOC 1. I can't figure out
what is going on. It is a new problem with this template.

How did you clear bold formatting from your Heading 2 paragraphs? If you selected them and (for example) clicked the Bold button, then you have applied direct formatting ("Not bold") to text, and direct formatting will appear in the table of contents.

If, in addition, the TOC 2 style is formatted in bold text, that would explain why the page number is in bold.

In the default 2003 Normal.dot all the TOC styles are based directly on
Normal (there's no cascading); in 2007 the document defaults are used
instead, but with the same effect, so a change in TOC 1 would not affect TOC
2. So that's a red herring.

Have you changed the font in the document defaults? Or have you used a
different font for either of the TOC styles (aside from the bolding)?

If you like, you can send me a copy of the document (or representative
portion of it) to take a look at.
