I have a 20 chapter manual. I want to number my chapters
as follows:

Chapter 1 starts with page 1-1
Chapter 2 starts with page 2-1
Chapter 3 starts with page 3-1
And so on...

I am making sure that my sections breaks are set properly
with the Same As Previous feature turned off for each
section since they are starting with different chapter
numbers.

The problem I have is whenever I try to print the
document, Word updates the pagination and the fields and
my chapter numbering is constantly breaking. For example,
instead of my restarting at page 1, the page numbering
will continue from the previous chapter. For example, if
the page numbering for Chapter 10 is starting at 10-1 and
ends at page 10-30, Chapter 11 will start at page 11-31,
which is not correct because I want Chapter 11 to start at
page 11-1.

Do you know what could be causing this problem? Is this a
bug? How can I get Microsoft Word to stop updating the
pagination and fields everytime I want it to print?

If you can advise me with this problem or know someone who
can that would be great.

Do you know where I can take an advanced course in
Microsoft Word that addresses these types of problems/bugs?

Thank you in advance for your help.

You don't have to turn off Same as Previous to include the chapter number in
the page number or to restart at 1. What you *do* have to do, however, is
use Format Page Number to change "Continue from previous section" to "Start
at 1." The only time Same as Previous must be disabled is if you change the
number format from, say i, ii, iii to 1, 2, 3.

Thank you for your reply.

But why are the fields updating everytime I print? Are you
saying it's because I have been turning the Same As
Previous off?

Hi Giselle,

The fields update everytime you print because of the setting under Printing
options in Tools>Options>Print. If for some reason you don't want them to
update, uncheck the Update fields box.

Please post any response to the newsgroups for the benefit of others who may
also be following the thread.

Hope this helps,

Page numbers and other fields in the header (and Time, Date, Page, PageRef,
and FtnRef fields in the body of the document) update at print time
regardless of the setting in the Print Options. See "WD97: Fields Updated
When Document Repaginated [Q89953]."

Thanks to you and Doug for your responses.

Another thing that Word does which I HATE is that it
updates the filed when I open the file. To try and solve
this problem I went into Tools, then Options. I clicked on
the General tab and unchecked the "Update automatic links
at Open" field. Then I saved the file.

When I reopen the file, Word goes back and starts updating
the links. When I check the option in the General tab, I
notice that Word checks the field that I previously
unchecked. Why does it do this?

Another thing I notice that in the General tab the
field "Background pagination" is checked. I cannot uncheck
this because it is grayed out.

Also, I keep generating all these .tmp files everytime and
I have no idea why this is happening.

This is what I HATE about this tool. I have never seen a
tool that causes so many problems for so many people. I
feel as if I have no control over this tool whatsoever.
You tell it to do something and it does something else
without any rhyme or reason. What gives?

Thank you guys so much for your help. Hopefully, this
newsgroup will help me keep my sanity.

You can't disable background repagination except in Normal view, so you
might try switching to Normal view and saving that way. That might also
prevent the links from updating at open (since you won't be repaginating).
