Word 97

Hello,
I would like to number several items in a document in the following manner:

1.1
1.2
1.3

However, when creating the style, I can't see a way to start numbering in
this format as opposed to 1, followed by 1.1. Nor can I see a way to skip
past level one numbering and jump right to the level two. Can anyone offer
thoughts on how to start numbering at 1.1?

Thank you very much,
Jennifer

If all the numbered items will start with 1, then you can just type in 1. as
text to precede the number (in the same way you type a period to follow it).
But if you want the numbering to reflect the order of preceding unnumbered
headings, then you'll have to work through the Outline Numbering setup
(through Format Style for the top-level style) and experiment. It would
appear that you can't pick up the level of a heading that is not numbered
(not even using Legal Style numbering). But you could experiment with
formatting the top-level number (Font... button) as White or Hidden, both of
which seem to still result in a number in lower levels.

Thanks very much Suzanne. I will take your suggestion and work with the
White/Hidden properties.

It's easy.

Just specify that numbering starts at 1 and omit the first Heading 1 style.

For example, open a blank document and insert a Heading 2 style paragraph.
It gets numbered as 1.1.

Hi Jennifer:

You need a "Level 1" style in the document to set the most significant
number.

I normally use Heading 1.

Then use Heading 2 for your numbered items.

You can set the Heading 1 paragraph to Hidden if you do not want to print
it, but it must exist in the document.

Having inserted a Heading 1, you can right-click the number to allow you to
assign the starting number. If you do this, you must have "Automatically
update styles on open" switched off in your Attach Template dialog, or it
will overwrite the assigned number each time you open the document.

You do not, of course, have to use Heading 1, you could use List Number and
List Number 2, or you could make your own style series.

Hope this helps

You do not need to include the first Heading 1.

Howard!

Think again... What would she get if there were no Heading 1 above the
Heading 2's?

Think about it. Better still, try it...

Cheers

Hi John

I'm confused: I get 1.1.

I must be missing something. <g>

But if she ever wants 2.1, she'll need a Heading 1 to restart numbering.

I have.

It works in Word 9. No need for first Heading 1.

Perhaps, I have styles/numbering defined differently, but it works for me.

Heading 2
Heading 1
Heading 2

I see

1.1
2
2.1

Precisely. A Heading 1 is required to restart numbering (you claimed it
wasn't necessary).

No, we are talking about different things.

H2
H1
H2

is not an instance of "restarting numbering". It is the ordinary sequence
of numbering within a section.
Word just happens to default the first number to 1 if you do not out an H1
before the first H2.

"Restart numbering" refers to changing the starting number in a DIFFERENT
section.
