Apologies if this is a common question but is it easy to get a number field
rather like autonum but without the proceeding full stop (.). ANy advice
would be greatfully received.

You can format numbering in a variety of ways. Using "Number style," you can
choose roman or arabic numerals, letters, cardinal or ordinal text, etc. In
the "Number format" box you can delete the period and add any other text you
want. This is in Word 97, but there are similar options in other versions.
