Section and Subsection numbering

I am using Word 2002. I have created an Outline for
document and I can see the various levels and subsection
level. I would like the numbering to be 1. Section
Heading 1 and the 1.1 for level 2 and 1.1.1 for level 3
etc. The only numbering that I can get is a list which
starts at 1 and increments sequentially. I have tried
to select the Outline List which I want in the Bullets
and Numbering menu but the only thing I get is 1,2,3 etc
down the outline. All the levels are ignored.
Frustrating...
