Appendix numbering not incrementing

Hello.

I am using Word 95 with the basic style, Appendix.
I did not create this style -- I guess it came with Word.

For some reason, when I apply the style to two different text lines,
both show "Appendix A".
One should show "Appendix A", while the other should show "Appendix B".

This *did* work fine before, and I don't know when it broke.

I don't see anything weird when I edit the style -- it's based on
Heading 1, is centered, and the numbering is customized to have
"Appendix" text appear before the number.

No matter what I set the numbering to, it absolutely will not increment.
How is that? If this style is based on Heading 1, shouldn't it at
least increment like Heading 1?????

I'm confused and need help "fixing" this.

What's really going on...

I created a new document.
Then, I created a new style based on "Heading 1", but that style does
not take Heading 1's numbering format. I MUST define a numbering
format. And, I do this.

So, suppose I have:
=================
Appendix <#>
blah, blah blah

Appendix <#>
mo' blah, blah
=================

When I apply my new style to the "Appendix" lines only, the <#> will not
increment because there are paragraph markers between the lines.
I have to highlight everything in between and apply the numbering
format. THEN, the <#>s increment fine.

WHY?

I swear I didn't have to do this before -- I just applied my new style
and the <#>s incremented properly!

BTW, section breaks before the "Appendix" lines do not help.

Does anyone know what's going on??

It sounds to me as though you have somehow got a List Numbering format
applied to the Appendix style instead of an Outline Numbering format.

Go back to Format/Bullets and Numbering and check that you are using the
Outline numbering tab for your modifications.

I can't be more specific: you have not told me which version of Word you are
using.
