Help. We cannot turn off auto numbering. If I go to
Format-Style-Modify-Format-Numbering it is set to none. However, if we
are in Word and start to type in our own numbers ex: 1. Testing. As
soon as he hits enter it puts in 2. and changes the spacing inbetween
the numbers. How can this be turned off. He wants to do his own
numbering and spacing inbetween the numbers. I have already tried to go
to Format-Style-Modify-Format-Paragraph and checking Suppress Line
Numbering. Nothing seems to work. HELP!

Amy,
You need to turn off automatic numbering in AutoCorrect. You don't say
which version of Word you are using, if it is Word97, go to Tools,
AutoCorrect, AutoFormat as you type tab, clear the "Automatic Numbered
Lists" option. In Word 95 or 6.0 choose AutoFormat from the Format menu,
click Options, select AutoFormat As You Type, and clear the Automatic
Numbered Lists check box.
Hope this helps.

I too wish help was sometimes more helpful! :-) I was impressed with your
investigation of styles to fix your problem, styles can sometimes cause
things to happen that you did not intend.
One thing to keep in mind for the future is that a lot of the things that
happen "automatically" on your screen are a result of an AutoCorrect or
AutoFormat. I turn off a lot of things in AutoFormat as you type,
especially "Define Styles based on Your Formatting." If you leave this on,
for example, and you type a centered, bolded, paragraph at the beginning of
the document, Word will automatically format it with the Title style. Which
may or may not be what you want.
Good luck!
