As I was in the process of formatting this document, Word 2000 decided
to internally renumber the pages in several chapters so they run 2-5,
2-2, 2-2, 2-2, 2-3, 2-4, then 5-1 through 5-5, 5-2, 5-3, 5-2, 5-2,
etc. I have looked in normal view and find only normal page breaks in
this material.
I stripped out all the pagination. Word didn't care. On the
information bar the numbering went 1,2,3,4,5,2,2,2,3,2,3,4,5.
I made a copy of the document and deleted two pages on either side of
the offense only to have the problem repeat. I can find no textual
link to these renumbered pages. In Normal View I have turned off
background pagination.
In desperation I have used Insert Fields/ListNum to force the page
numbers behind text like 2- or 5-. However, Fields forces them as
2-1), 2-2). I know the 2)--with the parenthesis--is linked to the
style level, but I took out \ 1 style level switch and that didn't
have any effect. Worse, in two instances the numbering skips as in
5-13, 5-9, 5-14.
I'm stumped. I know Word doesn't understanding numbering. But I
thought it understood fields.
How do I get Word to either recognize the correct page numbers, or how
do I use Fields to do the job, and then what must I do to creat a TOC
using the fields?
Thanks in advance for any and all help.

You mention normal page breaks. To my mind, a normal page break is when
there is too much text for one page so Word forms another. Close to that is
when a paragraph is formatted to have a page break before it. Anything else
is an abnormal page break. Not sure that it matters, though, for purposes of
your questions.
Page numbering is controlled by sections and the page numbering for each
section is stored (I think) in the section break at the _end_ of that
section. The more section breaks you have, the more chances you have to mess
this up.
You may want to take a look at <URL:
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/Numbering/PageNumbering.htm> and <URL:
http://www.addbalance.com/usersguide/sections.htm>.
Try turning on display of non-printing characters and then going through,
section by section, and taking a look at the Page Number format dialog (view
through header/footer view) in each section. Make sure that it is set to
continue numbering from the previous section.

I've printed out the url info and will be reading it soon. In the
meantime, I figured out a workaround to help meet my deadline. It's
based on a clue someone dropped casually in the middle of another
discussion. I make Word put in the section breaks. I used search and
replace to strip out all the section breaks (because some of them were
hidden even in Normal View). I selected the text I wanted to make
two-column and formatted it accordingly. Word inserted the breaks.
That worked for 87 of my 100 pages. For the last chapter I had to put
Ctrl+Enter page breaks as the bottom of every page, format that page,
then go on to the next. Otherwise the page numbers and the graphics
jumped.
Anyway, I just printed out a copy that should be acceptable to the
Navy come January.
Thanks again,
Warren

As I explained to Charles, below, my procedure was basically as you
describe, except I used Search and Replace to get rid of the section
breaks.
The irony is that the document page numbering behaved quite well in
the single-column version. Only in the two-column version did it go
south on me.
Anyway, thanks again, and thanks for Words Into Type which I've been
sending my writing students to for over 20 years.
