Page Numbering (1.1, 1.2, 1.3, etc.)

Using Word 2003
I have 5 different files. They are actually 5 chapters of a book in 5
separate files.
What I want to do is automatically number the pages in file/chapter one 1.1,
1.2, 1.3, etc. Then in file two automatically number the pages 2.1, 2.2,
2.3, etc. and so on. Do I have to combine the files and separate the
chapters with section breaks to automatically number these or is there an
easy way to number them as I want without combining the files?

Yes, you have to combine the files into a single Word document. After you've

You could combine the files or not, as you choose. The main difference is
that if you choose to leave the files separate, you need to set the heading
1 starting value for chapter 2 to 2, that for chapter 3 to 3, and so on.

Of course if you later combined and rearranged the chapters, you'd need to
reset or redo the numbering.

Note also that RD fields must be used to create a common table of contents
for the different files. It will be a lot easier to make use of a single
file.
