My question is, has Microsoft created any mechanism by which we can build simple bullet styles that follow the simple behavior expected of them? That is, rock solid bullet styles that don't change (drop bullet symbols, change alignment, etc.) and are predictable?

In an effort to minimize the chances of Word displaying bullets incorrectly or unpredictably, or both, I've begun to methodically rebuild my bullet styles in an identical fashion. My goal was simple: to have five bullet styles with the first indented 0.25", and the rest indented in increments of 0.25" (that is, 0.25", 0.5", 0.75", 1", 1.25").  I built all five styles using the following standards:
  • All use List Paragraph in the 'Style based on' field
  • All use 0.25" spacing between the bullet and the text to the right of the bullet
  • All use the same style in the 'Style for following paragraph' field. For example, Bullet 2 uses Bullet 2 in the 'Style for following paragraph' box.
  • All use Bullet List Level 1
I've discovered that Word displays settings for my bullet styles that don't correspond to reality. These style settings are displayed when you open the Style Inspector and click the Reveal Formatting icon. I'm wondering if these inconsistencies play a role in the root problems of bullet formatting in Word. The incorrect info is in bold.

Bullet 1
Correct Info Displayed: Indent Left: 0.25", Hanging: 0.25", Left
Incorrect Info Displayed: (Bulleted + Level: 1 +) Aligned at: 0.75" + Indent at: 1"
Actual indents from left: Bullet at 0.25", Text at 0.5"

Bullet 2
Correct Info Displayed: Indent Left: 0.5", Hanging: 0.25", Left
Incorrect Info Displayed: (Bulleted + Level: 1 +) Aligned at: 0.75" + Indent at: 1"
Actual indents from left: Bullet at 0.5", Text at 0.75"

Bullet 3
Correct Info Displayed: Indent Left: 0.75", Hanging: 0.25", Left
Incorrect Info Displayed: (Bulleted + Level: 1 +) Aligned at: 1.25" + Indent at: 1.5"
Actual indents from left: Bullet at 0.75", Text at 1"

Bullet 4
Correct Info Displayed: Indent Left: 1", Hanging: 0.25", Left
Incorrect Info Displayed: (Bulleted + Level: 1 +) Aligned at: 0.75" + Indent at: 1"
Actual indents from left: Bullet at 1", Text at 1.25"

Bullet 5
Correct Info Displayed: Indent Left: 1.25", Hanging: 0.25", Left
Incorrect Info Displayed: (Bulleted + Level: 1 +) Aligned at: 2.75" + Indent at: 3"
Actual indents from left: Bullet at 1.25", Text at 1.5"

The information on the following article by fellow MVP Shauna Kelly applies equally well to bullets

"How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in your Microsoft Word
document" at :

If you create a template to hold your numbering scheme, you can use that
template as the basis for new documents (using File > New) and the new
documents will then inherit your numbering scheme. To do that, see:

a.. All use List Paragraph in the 'Style based on' field
b.. All use 0.25" spacing between the bullet and the text to the right
of the bullet
c.. All use the same style in the 'Style for following paragraph' field.

For example, Bullet 2 uses Bullet 2 in the 'Style for following paragraph'
box.

d.. All use Bullet List Level 1
