I'm an experienced Word user, but this problem has me stumped. I'm using Word
2000. Every file opens as "Read Only." Word Help only tells me how to open a
file as "Read Only," not how to get rid of the "Read Only" option. This just
started yesterday. I've checked my documentation, Microsoft's FAQs, but found no
mention of this problem except with the use of an FTP server, whatever that is.
I'm a single user, not on a network or server. Has anyone out there experienced
this? I really don't want to have duplicates, triplicates and quadruplicates of
all my files, and it makes my templates especially hard to use! Help!

Have you crashed Word recently?
Reboot your PC.
Set Windows Explorer to display hidden files and the suffixes of known file
types.
Search for
~$*.do?
Delete any files found.
Delete *everything* in c:\windows\temp.
Try again :-)

Where these files backed up to, or copied from, a media such as a CD-ROM or a
Zip-drive?

Hi Chris,

If you work out what was causing it, please let us know because I _want_to_
force word to open files as read only even when the files themselves are not
read only. Your problem is my goal.

See my post 'HELP: open as read only when file isn't read only' & good
luck.

Cheers
