If you don't want *any* spaces underlined (even in continuous runs of
underlining), you can use Word Underline (Ctrl+Shift+W), but I'm not sure
what to tell you to do to accomplish the result you want without doing that.
Although I rarely use underlining, I can recall being annoyed by this
behavior with bold and italic formatting in the past. This seems to have
been fixed in Word 2003, as I can't now replicate it. I had thought that
perhaps it would be affected by the setting of the "When selecting,
automatically select entire word" option on the Edit tab of Tools | Options,
but that seems to make no difference in Word 2003; you might check to see if
it helps in your version.
