In Word 2K, when I dbl-clk the .Doc file name in Explorer, Word opens the document as Document1 and not as the named document ThisIsMine.Doc.

Within Explorer, View | Folder Options, I edited the File Types for Microsoft Word Document.. I then edited the open  action item:
In the box: Application Used to Perform Action, I have:
   "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\WINWORD.EXE" /n
In the box: DDE Message I have:
   [REM _DDE_Direct][FileOpen("%1")]

Any idea why my existing document opens as Document1???

Thanks for the assist.

Did you by any chance save this document as a template then rename it from
'ThisisMine.dot to ThisIsMine.doc? Once a template always a template!
If not then from Windows Start > run type Winword /r - then enter
to re-register Word.

Tek Howard:
I am having the same problem here is a reply from Greg
Maxey and the URL for a pretty sophisticated web site on
the subject. I am still working through the solution.
If you want to see my original question and the reply it
is posted in the newsgroup list a little below yours 1:31
pm on 2/15. Good Luck.

Greg Maxey:

You have done what thousands have done. Somehow saved a
document is
progress as your normal.dot file. Yes it is The Master
template. See:

tm

You may need to ensure "show hidden files and folders" is
checked in Windows
Explorer>Tools>Folder Options>View to find the normal.dot
file

Thanks you for your prompt response.

I think I modified the Normal.Dot template a few months ago by opening it directly (after closing out all open docs).

I just did a search for any file that begins with the name document* and got no file hits.

This problem I am having is when I dbl-clk on **any**  .Doc file in Explorer. Not just the ThisisMine.dot I used as an example.

Just prior to having this problem, when I dbl-clik'd a .Doc file, Word would be launched, but nothing would be open, not even a blank/new document. I fixed this by tweaking something under File Types for the .Doc extension. But can't remember my exact actions.

Do you have any further ideas before I take your "/r" advise???

If clicking from Explorer is producing the wrong action, then re-registering
Word as suggested will correct the file associations. There can be several
reasons for what is happening. I have already suggested one. Another is that
the default action for Word doc files is New and not Open. Re-registering
will revert that to what is supposed to happen.

Yup!

The RUN: WinWord /r solved the problem.

Thanks for all your guidance.
