I type a monthly newsletter using one of the Word templates (brochure, I
think).
After the first one, I just go in and modify the old one and "save as" under
a new title. When I choose insert clip art from the toolbar, and I search
for certain themes, I get a bunch of selections on the right hand side, but
they are all icons with "dglxasset..." written on them. I can't see the
actual picture until I select it and paste it into my document. If I don't
like it, I have to delete that image and try another mystery clip, until I
find one that is appropriate.

How can I get it so that the selections are visible on the thumbnail icons?

Try the following this usually clears the problem...

Empty your Temporary Internet Files cache
In Internet Explorer, click Tools, and then click Internet Options.
On the General tab, click Delete Files.
