In Outlook 97 see if the Tools=>Options menu has Journalling enabled
for Word. If so, then the file close takes more time as the Journal grows.
This setting was changed in the Summer 1997 Service Release for Office 97
(SR1). Might want to take a look into updating to the current configuration
of Office 97 SR2 (summer 98) plus some additional updates since then on
http://officeupdate.com/Word in the downloads section (AutoUpdate isn't
supported for Office 97).
You can phone MS for a free update CD that will take you up through SR2.
(800) 360-7561 in the U.S.

Use [Start]=>Find and check for offitems.log and look at the date.
If it's recent, then Outlook is still journalling :)
Try renaming that file and see if it changes anything.

The file will continue to be rebuilt by Outlook until you change the journalling
setting. Still a good idea to update to Office 97 SR2B (actually it's closer to SR3
with some of the additional fixes they're bundling together under things like
'Leap Year' fix :)

Bob,
WOW, did you hit that one right on the head!
I opened a Doc, and timed it's closing........1min-28sec.
Renamed offitems.log.
went back with the same doc...............3sec to close.
Thanks a heap!
I'm gona watch my other Office apps for awhile & if I
see no problems, that file is going in the trash.
It's almost 1mg in size & I ain't got a big HD
Thanks, again.
