Page formatting for manuscript:

First page number centered in footer (first page of the chapter)
Next page Left Justified in header (even numbered page--even numbered pages
should appear on the left side of page)
Next page Right Justified in header (odd numbered page--odd numbered pages
should appear on right side of page)

I can get this far but what do I do when I start a new chapter and how do I
put in the introduction which uses
small roman numerals?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Les

First of all, have a look at
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/Numbering/PageNumbering.htm.

What you want requires the following:

1. A section break at the beginning of each chapter.

2. "Different first page" and "Different odd and even" headers/footers
enabled. Put your centered drop folio in the First Page Footer and recto and
verso running heads in the Odd Page Footer and Even Page Footer.

3. Disable Same as Previous in the section following the Introduction. This
isn't required just to restart the page numbering, but it is required if you
want to change the format of the page number (which you do). After unlinking
the front matter headers/footers from the rest of the document, change the
page number formatting in the front matter section(s), and restart numbering
at 1 for the rest of the book.
