Using MS Word 2003, I cannot figure out how to
remove horizontal lines from a simple document.
At one point, I inserted the lines, I forget
exactly how, and now I want to get rid of them.

I did search around in Help but I couldn't find
out how to remove them.

Thanks in advance for your help.

You don't need to post more than once.

The line could be placed in a variety of ways. The most common are
paragraph border or some such (See Format Borders and Shading and border
of a table.) and table border (See Table Draw Table). It could also be
a drawing object (See drawing toolbar.) or even, if you worked at it, an
underline of blank characters.

And I might have missed a few.

Let us know.

"Let us know."

I don't remember how I put them in, I just want
to get them out without retyping a 6 page document.

As the document is on line which is how I back up the piece, please
feel free to look at it: http://charlesumlauf.com/instances.doc

If you have the time and inclination perhaps you could figure out by
looking at it how they were generated and how to remove them.

Thanks in advance for any help.

See http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/CantGetRidOfLine.htm for cause,
cure, and prevention of the most likely possibility.

They are part of the paragraph formatting.

Go to Tools Options View Formatting marks. Check Paragraph marks.

Check the document for the lines.

At the first line, observe the paragraph mark to the upper left of the
line. That line is part of the formatting of that paragraph. Go to
Format borders and shading and select None for border.

Go through the document and delete them all in the same way.

If you want to delete them all at once, highlight the entire document.
Then go to Format borders and shading and select None for border.
Save the document.

Let us know.

Thank you Suzanne S. Barnhill for pointing me to your FAQ.

Control + Q got rid of the lines which I now remember I generated
with the - key.

I'll add my thanks. I've followed this thread because I had a similar
problem. I had to highlight multiple pages to get to the point where the
line (from lots of asterisks) was gone. Thanks.
