I'm trying to put multiple tables of contents in a
Microsoft word doc. (i.e. table of contents, list of
figures, and list of tables). I can make two tables using
the Word's "Table of Figures" and "Table of Contents" but
I can not make a third table because Word wants to over
write one of the other two tables.

I greatly appreciate anyone's feedback on this issue.

Sincerely,
Tom

There are several approaches you can use here, but the easiest way depends
on working with Word's default settings. You've probably already figured out
that if you've used Word's built-in heading styles for your headings, it's a
snap to build a table of contents. The same is true for the Table of Figures
and List of Tables. If you have used Word's built-in captions, then you have
captions numbered with SEQ fields using the "Figure" and "Table"
identifiers, and when you go to Insert | Index and Tables (or Insert |
Reference | Index and Tables in Word 2002) and choose Table of Figures, you
can choose which captions you want to build your list from. You then do it
once for figures and once for tables. When Word asks if you want to
overwrite the existing TOC, say no.

You can also create these fields by hand. You can insert SEQ fields with any
label you like and then create a TOC based on those fields. The field codes
for the default Table of Figures and List of Tables (which you can see by
pressing Alt+F9) will look something like this:

{ TOC \c "Figure" }
{ TOC \c "Table" }

If you have numbered something with a { SEQ Whatever } field, then your TOC
field would be:

{ TOC \c "Whatever" }
