View merged data - limited number of characters?

I am working in Word 2003, my data source is an Excel linked to an SQL
database. My word document is linked to the Excel file through mail
merge, however I am only getting part of the data, i.e. 255 characters
(incl space). Does anyone know why I can't get the full data in word,
while I can see everything in Excel?
