I am trying to filter out certain records in a mail merge to a
directory and it just isn't working the way I think it should. I need
to inspect 3 fields in each record. I want to select all records where
either the keyword 1 field is Manuscript or the keyword 2 field is
Manuscript and the Status filed is Not Equal to Sold. I have tried
this many ways and nothing works. Can anyone help? I've done it in
Word 2003 and 2007.

Using the filter records dialog select
Field 1 equal to Manuscript
AND
Field 3 not equal to Sold
OR
Field 2 equal to Manuscript
AND
Field 3 not equal to sold

I also have had this problem. I tried your search; Word inserts a spurious line at the end: OR Status Is blank

This is similar to results I have had using the mailmerge filter on several computers and 2 different versions of Office. I've seen listings of others with the problem, but no solutions.

I forgot to come back to let everyone know how I fixed this problem.
There were 2 things going on. One was the addition of the Status is
blank piece and one was some other oddness.

1. Turns out you don't get the correct results is you say If Status
equals Sold'. You have to say 'If Status contains Sold'. Same with 'no
equal' which has to be 'does not contain'. These fields are text and
not numbers. I can't explain why we go the results we got but
remembering that these are text strings and using the right logical
operator made the difference.

2. Excel allows groups logic statements as follows:

If A contains B and c contains L

OR

If A contains B and C contains J

OR

etc

This is what worked for me
