I have document that is used to create a mail merge
document. It consists of a Header and Footer, and a table
which contains the merge fields. This document is
typically many pages long, and trying to insert page
numbers simply does not work. What happens is the page
numbers don't increment. Rather they simply stay as 1 of
100 throughout the document. I've tried putting the page
numbers before and after the merge, but neither method
makes any difference.

Any ideas and thanks in advance?

Hi Carlos,

What fields are you using for the page numbers.

Use { PAGE } of { SECTIONPAGES }

Please respond to the newsgroups for the benefit of others who may be
interested.

Hope this helps

Hi Doug

I have no idea what fields they are. What I did was from
the menu I tried inserting Page Numbers as well as trying
to insert autotext Page X of Y into the footer. Neither
method has helped.

Thanks
Carlos

If, as I suspect from your description, the merge is a Catalg/Directory
merge, then the merged document will not be split into multiple sections, as
Doug suggested would be the case with a form letter merge. In such a case,
your page X of Y should work, but there are conditions, in some Word
versions, where it doesn't update correctly. For these, see -
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/AppErrors/PageXofY.htm

possibly the simplest solution is to add a macro to a toolbar button that
will force an update
