Hi and Help! I have been trying to create a form letter
and labels in word 2000 sr1 (windows professional 2000
environment)with the intention of doing a mail merge from
contact information in outlook. Each time I have tried to
create a form letter or label document, the insert merge
field along with a number of other buttons on the mail
merge toolbar are 'grayed-out'; why is this? I have tried
on three of our laptops, all Dell Latitudes with the same
issue. What am I missing and what is recommended that I do
to correct or use this properly?

Thank you,

Peter

Usually most of the options are greyed out until Word thinks you have
selected a data source. If you haven't selected one yet, that's almost
certainly the problem. If you have selected one, it's possible (although I
haven't seen this much with Word 2000) that Word has decided the data source
is invalid without telling you - if you click on the MailMergeHelper button
you should be able to see roughly what Word thinks has been set up.
