Formulated very simply, Outlook bases on Exchange, and when Outlook is
installed and configured correctly, bits and pieces of Exchange are also
present on your machine.
Now, generally, the message you quote would indicate Outlook is NOT
installed (people who try to merge with Outlook EXPRESS see it, for
example). I recommend you go to an OUTLOOK newsgroup and ask them what
the problem might be.

This reply is posted in the Newsgroup; please post any follow question or
reply in the newsgroup and not by e-mail :-)
Set it in OUTLOOK. From Outlook Help file:
Make Outlook the default program for E-mail, Contacts, and Calendar
1.. On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click Other.
2.. Under General, select the Make Outlook the default program for E-mail,
Contacts, and Calendar check box.

Thanks for answering my question. Unfortunately, when I open "Other" all I have to select (under "General") is the option to "Empty the Deleted Items Folder upon exiting."
Do you use OUTLOOK2003? Type "Make OUTLOOK Default" in the OUTLOOK Help
search and see if something different is listed for your version.
I think I read somewhere that to use Word2003 as your e-mail editor you have
to have OUTLOOK2003.
If you still have problems you might want to post in the OUTLOOK Newsgroup.
