New outline numbering on old documents

Hi all

Does anyone know of a good reference I could use to find out more about how
I can update outline numbering on a precedent document?

By that I mean, I have lots of documents I use time and time again but I add
in new paragraphs and new headings and I would like to know how I can update
the automatic numbering without having to maunally go in and type the
numbering I need.
