Applies formatting to whole doc, not selected text

I read the article "Formatting Is Applied to the Whole
Document Instead of to the Selected Text (814085)" in the
Knowledge Base. That's the exact issue I have...when I
go to, e.g., bullet a list, I select the text to be
bulleted and click the Bullets button, and it applies it
to the whole doc instead of just the selected text. But,
the solution they give in that article doesn't resolve
the issue. (In fact, "Automatically Update" is not even
there - not just grayed out...really not there - to
deselect on some Styles, such as "Bulleted.") Any ideas
on how how to resolve this? Thanks, in advance, for your
help!

Word's built-in styles do not include any named "Bulleted" (there are List
Bullet styles), so this must be a custom style. Are you sure you're looking
at Format | Style and not Format | Bullets and Numbering? See

Yes, I'm sure...I'm selecting Styles & Formatting on the
Format pull-down menu, and then the Styles pop-up in a
list on the far right side of the open Word window.
There are 3 "Bulleted" styles. If I look at the
Properties for one of them, it says, "Style Type: List."
The same thing happens if I try to apply bold or
underline to selected text...it bolds or underlines all
the text in the whole doc.

If you're using a list style, then no one here will know how to help you
because we don't know how they work. I've just tried applying one, and
indeed the "style" includes only font and numbering information; if you
press the Format button, Paragraph, Tabs, Border, Language, and Frame are
disabled. So this is not really a true paragraph style; it merely applies
numbering to an underlying style, and I'm betting that the list style is
(behind the scenes) using or based on List Bullet, which is often set to
update automatically by default.

I think Suzanne's put her finger on it here. As I understand it, a List
style applies a list template, but a list template can have linked paragraph
styles. So if the 'numbering' format of your list style is using a list
template that already refers to a style, that might explain the problem.

Sounds a circular recipe for disaster (how do the designers make these up
???), so if you want to continue your pioneer use of list styles <g> I
suggest you modify the number format of the list style and remove the linked
paragraph styles (you need to Click the More button on the customize dialog
to see this).

Better still would be to use the List Bullet paragraph style to apply bullet
formatting (having made sure it does not Automatically update). Put a
shortcut to it on your toolbar, in place of the default bullet button, which
is the source of much pain and aggravation.
