1. For some reason, the paragraph number shows up Bold. I try to highlight
text on both sides of the paragraph number and unbolding but it insists on
staying bold.
2. If I copy text from an earlier numbered paragraph to a later one, it
indents the copied text one more tab stop. I try to click on the toolbar
button to take it back one tab stop but it won't let me "de-dent" back to
the left.
3. When I copy a picture into the document, it often seems to re-set the
paragraph numbers to 1. I have to then go Edit, Paragraph Numbers, and
click the button to continue the previous series.
I'm obviously missing a fundamental understanding of how paragraph numbers
work. Can someone enlighten me? Thanks.
Usually, to get the appropriate numbering back, just click (or unclick) the
number format button on the toolbar.
Sometimes, using the Format Painter helps with appropriate numbering. Just
select the numbered paragraph that was last appropriately number, hit the
Format Painter, then select the paragraph that follows it.
Make sure your show/hide button is on so that you can see paragraph returns.
If you've bolded or unbolded text without ALSO selecting the paragraph
marker that ends that paragraph, your numbering won't change its format.
Formatting is stored in the paragraph marker. At this point, you can select
JUST the paragraph marker and take the bold off of it to remove the bold
from your numbering.

2. Select text that you wish to move, copy/cut and paste to new location.
If new location is between two existing para numbers, press <enter> at end
of first para (to create new numbered point) click curson just after number
and paste. If para indents further press shift and tab it should come back
into place.

Actually, since I started using Styles (as an ex-WordPerfect user I didn't
use them much - everything went into "Normal"!) I've found them quite
enlightening! Now Word works with me (for the most part) instead of against
me.
