How can I prevent this from happening all the time? Even
if the document I'm copying from is in times new roman,
isn't it supposed to paste it into the default font?
AFAIK, it is supposed to paste into the font of the (style of the)
paragraph you're pasting into. But maybe you find somethin under
paste/special that works more to your expectations ...

TNR 12pt was the built in default font in Word versions prior to Word2K. The
problem is that if you make a selection that doesn't include a paragraph
mark and paste it into a part of a document where Word cannot work out which
style to take on, it switches back to the default. This is much better
handled in W2k2 and W2k3 where you get a Paste Smart Tag that lets you
choose whether to use the destination or source formatting.
