Hello,

I'm working with a 150-page Word 2000 document. I've got a problem with footnotes
appearing out of order, and sometimes there's a contradiction between what's in
the body of the document and what's in the footnote window.

A couple of examples:

a) Sometimes there's a significant "jump" in the numbering of the footnotes (from
footnote #1 to #37, for example) even though no footnotes seem to be missing. The
body text and the footnotes themselves both display that jump. How to re-set the
numbering so it's consecutive and complete?

b) Other times, the body text skips in the numbering of footnotes, but the
footnote window displays footnotes numbered with the missing numbers. In other
words, the text goes right from footnote #2 to footnote #5, but in the footnote
window, there are footnotes #2,3,4, and 5. How to eliminate the "extra" footnotes
if there are no footnote markers for them? My last resort, backspacing or deleting
in the footnote window, doesn't eliminate them. (These "extra" notes are
duplicates of footnotes that were at one time moved elsewhere in the chapter; it's
as if they got "stuck" in the original place, even though I've deleted their
markers)

I know what you're thinking, that this is a result of my mistakenly trying to
delete footnotes by deleting them in the footnote window rather than by deleting
the footnote marker in the body text, but that's not the case. I've always moved
and deleted footnotes by working with their markers in the body of the document.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Could this result from Track Changes being enabled?

Hi,

I see what you mean, but "track changes" isn't enabled. Thanks, though!

I seem to remember that John McGie suggested doing a search in the text for
the "next footnote" and that this might highlight places in the document
where there is a "ghost" footnote. Haven't had an opportunity to try this
out yet, but it sounded highly feasible!
