I have a document with twenty sections -- mostly so I can
put the chapter name in each footer. I'd rather put the
chapter number (outline code level 1) and the chapter
name (TOC Level 1) in a single footer and let Word do the
work. Can I do this? How?

It has been my experience and that of many others that
too many section breaks with too much stuff in them will
result in a corrupted document. I'd rather let Word make
the substitutions. I can do it, I just don't know how.

Look in Word's Help for information on the StyleRef field, which will do
what you want (you'll probably need two of them to get both the number and
the text of the heading).
