Good Afternoon,

Using Word 97 SR2, wondering how or if it is possible to have the text
associated with the footnote numbering system placed where I want it on the
page? I seem to be able to choose - place below text - however Word wants
to default to below all the text on the page. I would like to be able to
position the explanation of the footnote - in the middle of my page, with
other regular text following it. Is this possible?

Any ideas will be greatly appreciated, Thanks in advance!

This is not possible with Word's current footnote capabilities, but it's
possible you could come up with some sort of workaround using a
cross-reference instead. You'd make your footnote a regular paragraph under
the paragraph where it was referenced. The footnote reference mark in the
text would be a SEQ field (so it will update more or less automatically if
more footnotes are added), and the reference mark in the note would be a
cross-reference to this number. I haven't tested this, so it will require
some experimentation, but there's bound to be some way to make it work.

In fact, another thought: you can insert cross-references to
footnote/endnote numbers. If you were to use endnotes instead of footnotes
(they would be at the end of the document, and you'd just throw them away),
you could then put the actual note text in the document with a
cross-reference to the appropriate endnote number.

Suzanne,

Thanks, I will experiment a bit. At least I have some ideas now.

Juli:

That's not a "footnote", it's an "ordinary" note. You should not use a
footnote symbol for it, or you will confuse your readers.

this is text this is text* this is text this is text this is text this is
text this is text this is text this is text this is text this is text this
is text this is text.

* Note that to do this, you should not use footnote symbols: they cause the
reader to look at the bottom of the page for the note.

I make a style for Note paragraphs.

The style that I usually use I call "Note" (funny that...) and I usually use
the word "Note" in bold in front of an indented paragraph.

NOTE: This is the note.

Best regards.
