Second, you need to have an idea of what pages each header and footer in
your document will show up on. Each section of your document can have up to
three pairs of headers and footers. First there is the generic
header/footer. It will be on all pages of a section unless you have checked
"different first page" or "different even and odd." If you check different
first page, you will have a first-page header/footer combination in addition
to the header/footer combination. If you check "different even and odd" your
generic header/footer will turn into the odd-page header/footer and you will
also have an even-page header/footer. See <URL:
http://addbalance.com/usersguide/sections.htm> for more on sections, section
breaks, and headers and footers.
So, make sure that you are inserting your watermark into the proper header
or footer.
Another alternative that would not involve adding sections or marking things
as "different" would be to use an IF field. Take a look at <URL:
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/Numbering/PageNumbering.htm> for how to set up
such a field. The only difference is that instead of the page number in the
IF field shown there, you would have your watermark anchor. I don't work
with this enough to describe verbatim how to do this, but if you try it and
have trouble, write back and I or someone else can walk you through it. You
might want to cross-post such a question in the mailmerge.fields and
graphics newsgroups. (Cross-posting means putting all of the newsgroups into
the address header of a single message, not posting duplicate messages in
different groups.)
Hope this helps,

We're both learning something because I don't think I've used your method
since Word 5 on my Mac! I know I don't like Insert => Page Number... and
why. I'm not sure why I started manually inserting watermarks; I suspect it
is because it helps me keep in touch with what is really going on (to the
extent anyone can figure out what is really going on with Word).
Basic insertion of WaterMark using direct access to Headers and Footers...
First put whatever it is that you want for your watermark in the Clipboard.
Then change to View => Headers and Footers...
Click in the header or footer box for the page on which you want the
watermark. Press Ctrl-V to paste the watermark. Position it and make sure
that it is formatted to be floating behind text (no wrapping). If it is a
picture being used as a real watermark (unlike a rubber-stamp
"CONFIDENTIAL") you may need to adjust the contrast or brightness in the
image to wash it out.
Close the Header / Footer toolbar. Your watermark will appear on every page
that the header or footer in which it was placed appears, and only on those
pages.
Advanced, using an IF field to limit the page(s) on which it appears...
See <URL:
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/Numbering/PageNumbering.htm> to get a feel for
what it is we will be doing here. Again, with the Header/Footer view showing
and your watermark in the Clipboard...
Assume for the moment that you are on page 3 of your document and you only
want the graphic on page 3.
Press Ctrl-F9 and then type:
IF Page = "3" "mytext" ""
Then select the word "Page" and press Ctrl-F9 again to make that a field.
Then, move your insertion point (cursor) right between the "y" and the "t"
in "mytext." Press Ctrl-V to paste your watermark. Drag the watermark where
you want it on your page. Make sure it is set to be floating behind text.
(If you have the view of object anchors turned on, you should see a little
anchor symbol still at the beginning of the line that has "mytext" in it.)
Then, select the word "mytext" and format it as white. That way it won't
show up when you print, but the watermark will.
Press F9 to update the IF field you just wrote. If you scroll to a different
page in your document (still in the header/footer view) you may notice that
the graphic disappears).
Even though the graphic seems to be floating somewhere in the middle of your
page, it is really right between those two letters in "mytext."
Close the header/footer view. Note that this is subject to the problems of
when fields get updated, but so long as your page numbers are also in the
headers or footers and they are correct, the field for the watermark should
be correct as well.

An alternative is to add your watermark to your template as an AutoText
field. You can then make your IF field something along the lines of { IF {
PAGE } = "3" { AutoText "MyWaterMarkAutoText" } "" }. You may still want to
format this field as White just in case your document gets disassociated
from the template that holds the AutoText entry.
Hope this helps,
