Now it has developed a sequencing problem with the
paragraph style used for number captions below graphic
figures..
It should automatically compose the caption's figure
number to pick up a section label and sequence number
(i.e, Figure C-1). It worked great in the past, but now
it doesn't sequence correctly now.
When you add paragraphs, the number increments
correctly. When you delete paragraphs, the numbers don't
get updated when refreshed. For example, you have:
Fig. C-1, Fig. C-2, Fig. C-3, Fig. C-4
remove Fig. C-2 and Fig. C-3 and the results, after
updating fields, are
Fig. C-1, Fig. C-4, instead of Fig. C-1, Fig. C-2
The field code looks like this:
Figure { STYLEREF 1 \s }-{ SEQ Figure \*Arabic \s 1 }
The same code shows both in recent documents where it is
not working and in old document versions s where it still
works (note: copy/pasting an old version paragraph into
the new document doesn't fix the problem - the pasted
paragraph adopts the "broken" behavior).
I hope I explained that clearly.
Can this be fixed? Is there any hope?

Three things to try:
1. Make sure there are no un-accepted tracked changes in the document.
2. Make sure that none of the fields are in hidden text.
3. Do Alt-F9 to expose all the field codes in the document. Once they're
revealed, you can search for them (eg search for SEQ MyList). Check them all
to make sure that they look the same.
And, by the way, Word 2002 is part of Office XP. Word 2000 is part of Office
2000.
Hope this helps.

Track Changes was the culprit. I didn't even realize Track
Changes was turned on in this document -- or that it could
adversely affect sequencing.

(PS... I was unclear earlier. I only meant that the OS was
XP, I didn't mean to suggest that Word 2000 was part of
Office XP.)

If that doesn't work, try it again. Sometimes I have to
tell Word 3 times to do something before it finally
realizes I'm serious.
Also, if that doesn't work, you might try starting at the
beginning of the document and re-applying the Figure
caption to every figure. A pain, but we deal with Word
documents all the time, and we've seen this behaviour over
and over again.
Good luck!
