Preventing blank line at top of page, space at beginning of line

When I am double spacing between paragraphs, is there a
way to have Word hide the extra blank line if it falls at
the top of a page? Is there a way to prevent it from
putting the extra space at the end of the sentence (I use
two spaces after a period)at the beginning of the line?

I'm a new user, converting from WordPerfect, which does
this automatically.

you do not double space, you use a style that has a paragraph-property
of double-spaced lines; that way, there are no extra paragraphs. Empty
paragraphs are your road to a lot of torn-out hairs in longer paragraphs
...

To expand on what Bob said: Do not press Enter twice between paragraphs.
This creates an extra empty paragraph that takes up just as much room in the
file as a full one (Word has to remember all the formatting for it even
though it contains no text), which unnecessarily adds to file size. It also
creates problems such as you're seeing. Another is that the "Keep with next"
property of headings will keep a heading with only one following paragraph;
if that paragraph is empty, you haven't gained anything.

If you add Space Before or Space After to a paragraph, however, Word will
automatically suppress this at the top/bottom of a page. An easy way to add
Space Before (12 pts) to a paragraph is to press Ctrl+0, but the best way to
handle this is to use a style with this formatting.

There's no way to make Word put two spaces after a period. I won't get into
the argument of whether you actually even want to do this (the majority
opinion is that it is not necessary or desirable when using a proportional
font), but you can set the grammar preferences to warn you when there are
not two spaces after a period.
