More on NumPages

I received a response to my query - thanks Suzanne. She
suggested to enter the following commands rather than
enter NumPages field. However, I am a bit confused as to
how I might enter this command?

{ = { NUMPAGES } -2 }

Please someone help me one more time.

Type it, without the field braces. Then select " NUMPAGES " and press
Ctrl-F9. Then select " = { NUMPAGES } - 2 " and press Ctrl-F9 again. Then
press F9 to update the field. Note that spaces are critical in = fields.

The only field I've seen a problem with spaces in is the = field. That was
when reproducing a forward date field by hand. If there weren't spaces
around each of the items in the = field (as there are when you use Insert =>
Field), the results were off. Granted, that field is an extreme example. I
believe that was with Word 2000 but it might have been 97. For obvious
reasons, I haven't tried to reproduce the behavior in Word 2002. My
recollection is that all it took to get the field to work was to put the
appropriate spaces in, no other changes in the fields. Since that field is
based on Chris Woodman's work, perhaps he knows, or not. I guess to some
extent my Word behavior is superstitious - I stick with what works, even if
I can't figure out a causal connection. I have heard that OrganizerCopy of
styles is much better in Word 2002 but I still copy three times.

There's what I consider a bug in the EQ \o field whereby if you don't delete
the last space in the field (before the closing field delimiter), the
character produced will include a space. That's one instance where a space
is *not* necessary!
