Hierarchy chart lines aren't straight

When I created an 'Org chart' using the Hierarchy SmartArt everything was
fine until I start moving the boxes. I only wanted to wided or make them
narrower than their original shape.
This then produced crooked lines between the top and bottom box. I need
these lines to be straight.
I've right clicked on everything and tried formatting it, but there's no
option to change the lines.
Also, when I make a change to one box, several others change as well. Is
there a way to turn all of this 'automatic formatting' off?
What am I overlooking?
Thanks,
Barb

A lot depends on exactly what you've done, and what you want. One option
would be to click Reset Graphic in the Design tab. Another option, when
dragging, is to press Ctrl as you drag. This forces the dragged object to
snap to the internal grid, making it easier to realign different boxes.

Thanks Herb..
When I clicked Reset Graphic, it reset it to it's original state... removing
all of the font changes and locations of the boxes.

I'll try the Ctrl - drag. Didn't know about that one.

When I moved a box using the Ctrl-drag, it still changed the shape of the
line attaching it to the box above. I now have crooked lines instead of
straight lines. Isn't there a way to straighten the lines? I've tried
clicking on just the line, but it doesn't do anything...

I don't know what you mean by crooked lines. I dragged for quite some time,
and the lines remain straight, albeit misaligned at the different junctions.
I'm not sure why I said Ctrl+Drag... I meant Alt+Drag.

Line segments are anchored to the center of each box. If you Alt+drag one
box, it should align to the internal grid. This should then make it possible
to Alt+Drag the box that is now misaligned and have it land so that it is
once again aligned in the new position.

I know exactly what you mean, when I move the box whether I use ctr or alt or just move it, the lines now go at an angle instead of right underneath the previous box- looks terrible

Just in case someone else comes to this forum for the answer to the above question (posted in 2008), do the following:
1. Select the the box that has the "crooked" line
2. Move the box in the opposite direction of where the line breaks, using the arrow keys on the keyboard
3. You may have to wait a second or two until the line adjusts. You can move the box above back and forth until the line straightens. If you need to, you may also move the box above to help straighten the line. Sometimes, if there are space restrictions, the line will be difficult to straighten. If this happens, the line will have a slight break - but not as visible as before.

Hope this helps!

I know it's an old thread but I'm sure people are still having the same problem. Here's what's going on.

When you set up an org chart in powerpoint it's basically a bunch of macros that say "create this box with a line connecting it to the active (selected) box." after that it doesn't care where you move the box to if you move it manually, it's going to keep those two boxes connected with that line come hell or high water. The reason the line is crooked is because the box is crooked with respect to where the line is connected.

what you want to do is undo the setup (ctrl-z) back to where it's straight and then PROMOTE or DEMOTE the box, and then get comfortable with the Layout button using Standard, Both, Left Hang, or Right Hang. Play with it for awhile and you'll be able to produce straight lines on command.

For instance, if you hit Add Shape three times on a box, it will produce three subordinates to that box. If you hit it a fourth time, it will produce a subordinate to one of the boxes that was subordinate to the original box. If you then select the new box and hit Promote, NOW the program HAS to have FOUR subordinates to the original box. The program assumes you have no more than three subordinates for some reason.

Hi there. Might be a bit old now, but is there no way to keep the lines straight when demoting or adding below.
