I am wanting to use my fill color option on a word doc and none of the colors
are lit up so I can use them.

Since you don't specify what version of Word or what "fill color button"
you're referring to [Drawing toolbar?] it's rather difficult to hazard a
guess. If you provide the necessary details perhaps someone can help.

In the mean while keep in mind that in no version of Word will any "fill
color button" be active unless you have something - shape, textbox, etc. -
*selected* to which a fill color can be applied. IOW, you can't just "fill
the document with color" or use fill colors on text, table cells & certain
other items. You may be in search of the Borders & Shading feature instead.
