Print Screen Clip art Picture Huuuuge Files

I have just converted to Word 2002 & find that
printscreen images (of which I might use 30 or more per
document) increase my file size by +/- 5Mb each. I have
tried Pasting Special as a jpeg (still 1.5 mb per image),
adjusting save options. This is on a brand new document
with change tracking, background save, andfast save
turned off. When using W97, my images added a couple of
hundred k each. What in the world is going on?????

By the way, linking is a poor option in our environment,
due to hardware limitations and user skills.

Graphics can greatly increase the size of a Word file, but you do not have
to include them in the file - if the file becomes bloated and slow, you can
use external graphics, linked into the document. Then it is very much
easier to work in Word. (If it's essential to include the graphics when the
document is finished - or prudent, such as when sending the file to others -
you can put them into a "Saved as" copy at the last moment.)

Do a "Save as" of the document to retain a good copy if anything goes wrong.
Then, on one of the copies, save the graphics out of the document as
separate files - preferably into the same folder as the document (makes it
easier to work). Then choose Insert menu » Picture » From File » navigate to
the folder. Select (tick) "Link to File" and make sure to de-select "Save
with document". Go through the document after you have done this and check
that all the graphics appear and the document scrolls well - sometimes
people report that the reality with linked graphics isn't nearly as good as
the theory.

Thanks Andre. We've considered the linked graphics, but
with 70 people in the dept, there are some user issues
with this approach.

The thing we are all puzzling over is that this *never*
happened when we used Word 97. Maybe we'll cancel our
contract & go back to it!

We recently upgraded from word97 to 2002 and (so far) have
had no such trouble, however when we were still using 97 I
noticed that the insert option used when a picture was
inserted made a huge difference to the file size, ie
insert object resulted in enormous files where insert
picture didn't, even with the same picture. Perhaps your
problem is related to whatever caused that. If you save
your document as an html it should make separate jpgs of
the pictures, you could try reinserting them (as pictures)
it might help.

I finally found the solution to this problem; it was
simple to fix once we found the cause.

Our default file format was Word 97-2002 & 6.0/95 RTF.
Once we reset it to Word Document we were fine.
