I'm using Word 2003 at work. I have sequentially numbered figure captions
(created using Insert > Reference > Caption, so they're auto-numbered). Many
of these captions are in text boxes because the figures have paragraph-text
wrapping around them (e.g., Wrapping Style: Square). But the captions that
are in text boxes do not show up in the Table of Figures. The captions that
are NOT in text boxes DO show up in the Table of Figures. How do I get the
captions that are in text boxes to show up in the Table of Figures? Or is
there an alternative to captioning the floating (i.e., with text wrapping
around) figures without using text boxes?

I've tried doing the captions using the built-in "Caption" style and setting
the Table of Figures to reference those items. I've also tried doing them by
setting my own "Figure Caption" style and setting the Table of Figures to
reference that style instead. Both ways give the same result. I've checked
the field codes for the captions inside and outside the text boxes, and they
are identical.

Incidentally, I remember this working fine at my last job where we had Word
2007. Maybe this is a glitch in 2003?

In Word versions prior to Word 2007, items in text boxes aren't recognized for
the purpose of table of contents/table of figures creation. What you can do is
insert the object "In line with text," add its caption in the main body of the
text, and then wrap a frame around the object and caption. To add a frame to the
selection, you can use the Insert Frame command on the Forms toolbar.

Thanks, Stefan. I also discovered that if I convert the text box itself to a
frame, this fixes the problem.

Yes, that would work too, of course. :-)
