I work with a lot of Word documents that have photos inserted. How can I
determine the dpi of an inserted photo, so I can tell (1) if it is overly
dense, and (2) whether it has sufficient resolution to print well?

Click on Tools -> Options and under the Edit section set Microsoft Photo
Editor to be your picture editor. To check the dpi of a picture, right click
on it and select Edit Picture, it will open in Microsoft Photo Editor and you
can click on File -> Properties to check the dpi.
