equation editor not displaying minus sign symbol

When the user types a minus sign (using Math style) you don't see it. It is
there cos if you select it is visible in inverted colours but can't see or
print under normal circumstances. If we change the style to Text and then
type sign, it is there but this is cumbersome and was never necessary before.
This is also only a problem for one of the users on that particular PC -
when I (administrator) log on, it works normally (ie the minus sign is
visible in Maths Style)

This is almost always (if not literally always) a problem with
the font symbol.ttf or mtextra.ttf. If you have a computer where
these symbols display properly, copy these fonts from that
computer and install them on the computer where you can't see the
symbols.
