In Word 2007, click on the Home tab, look at the right end of the Ribbon
for the Editing group, and click on Select | Select Objects.

In Excel 2007, click on the Home tab, look at the right end of the
Ribbon for the Editing group, and click on Find & Select | Select Objects.

Toolbar, then you won't have to go "Home" each time you need it.

But note that so-called lasso selection may not work in recent versions of
Word, unless you are working on a document in *.doc format.
