In SmartArt, how do I do this:
shape 1 on left connects to shapes 2 & 3 that are vertically arranged in the
center, then shapes 2 & 3 connect to shape 4 on right.
I can get shape 2 or 3 to connect to 4 seperately but not together

I don't know whether this will suit your purpose, but I would start by
inserting the Nondirectional Cycle shape in either the Cycle group or
the Relationship group, which has five boxes connected in a circle.
Select one of the boxes and press Delete. You now have four boxes,
left/right and top/bottom, connected in the manner you described. I
don't think there's any way to make the connectors straight.

I want to be able to continue adding shapes to the right but not in a circle.

In that case, the best I can suggest is that you use a separate
SmartArt object to create the additional shapes, and use an ordinary
drawing line to connect the two objects.

Microsoft has not made SmartArt flexible beyond the boundaries of what
they''ve provided. This may be forced on them by the programming
needed to make them behave as they do, but it's definitely restricted
("semi-Smart"?)
