You can use the Tools > Letters & Mailings > Envelopes & Labels
dialog. Choose the Avery 5388 index card in the options, which prints
three 3x5 cards on an 8.5x11 sheet. Click the New Document button to
make a document containing a table set up for these cards.

If you buy real Avery 5388 stock, it's perforated to match the table.
If you print on plain heavy paper, turn on the table's borders (in
Format > Borders & Shading) and then cut along the lines.

What i was looking for was a blnk template that uses standard 3x5 cards.

You may not find this since few printers can handle this paper size. If your
printer can, then you will find that paper size listed on the Paper tab of
Page Setup. Create a new document in that paper size, put whatever needs to
be in the template in it, and save it as a template (see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/CreateATemplatePart1.htm).
