.asd and .wbk confusion

Hello All,

A user in my office switches between Word 97 and Word XP, and has AutoSave
enabled in both versions. In the directory in which he is working, there are
both .wbk and .asd files as the backups/autosaves, but I can't determine
when/why Word creates a .wbk rather than a .asd, or the other way around.
Both are working fine as a backup source but it is just odd to see both
types of files in the same location.

I originally thought this was version-related but it does not appear to be
so.

Can anyone give me a crash course in Autosave and its related extensions?

The .asd file is the AutoRecover file. The .wbk file is the actual backup
created when you have "Always create backup copy" enabled. The .asd file is
deleted when you close the document and exit Word normally. It is used only
if Word hangs or the system crashes with the document open. The .wbk file is
your last previously saved version. If anything disastrous happens to the
version you're working on (such as the all-too-common case where a user
manages to delete the entire contents and then somehow panics and saves the
document), you can open the backup copy to get back the unedited version.
This has saved my bacon more than once.
