I know from reading the postings here that we should always turn "Fast
Saves" off. Does "Background Saves" have any disadvantages? Also, if
you're in the habit of saving frequently, is it better to turn off
autorecover? Thanks for any info.

Cora,

this is a real hot potato! Personally, I don't trust any of them and they
are deselected. But I have trained myself to press that Save key regularly
and my computer at work is running on a UPS system (it has failed once since
1975). But I know users who use both and are happy. Mind you, I asked them
what they would do if Word bombs out? How would you use the AutoRecovery
files and what would you expect to see. They all say that either they don't
know how to recover and would expect to recover everything they have done to
the document up to the time it bombed out! Ha, at least it keeps them
joyously happy.

Cora,

I use Word 7 and have "Automatic Save Every __ Minutes" selected. This
creates an .asd file in \Windows\asd as you are working. I've peeked
inside these files and they update everytime autosave runs.

Word 7 will open this file with "Recovered" in the title bar in case
of a crash. (I'm not sure how Word 8 handles this)

It's worked for me twice - most recently last week when my scanner
froze the system and I had to reboot w/o being able to close any
applications.

When I'm doing important editing, I set autosave to 1 minute (you can
type a lot in a minute!) It was an exam I was working on and I was
surely glad I had the recovered document!

If you are conscientious about Saving, then I suppose there is no need
for the autorecover.

AutoRecover is the Word 8 name for AutoSave. Background Saves are something
else.

Best I can figure, a background save is one that occurs in the background,
allowing you to continue working while the saving is going on (like
background printing). With it turned off, I guess you'd have to wait till
the save was completed for Word to return control of the program. In most
cases, saves are so fast that this wouldn't make much difference, but I do
have a big database (table with 17 columns and about 800 rows) that takes an
appreciably long time to save.

The official MS poop from the Help file is:

To continue working in Word while you save a document, turn on the
background save option. Keep in mind that background save uses additional
system memory; if you need to conserve system resources, you may want to
turn off background save.

1 On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Save tab.

2 Select or clear the Allow background saves check box.

Notes

· When Word saves a document in the background, a pulsing disk icon appears
on the status bar.
· If Word can't save a document in the background--for example, if you don't
have enough hard disk space or if you're saving a document to a floppy
disk--Word saves the document in the foreground instead.

Hi Cora,

I haven't heard of problems with background Saves, but I just distrust it on
principle. With short documents, the time taken to save is negligible. With
long documents that have meant a lot of work, I want to be *sure* it has
saved, & so I'm willing to wait for that.

I also keep background printing turned off, partly because of some reported
problems, & partly because Word sometimes hiccups when you try to do a print
when there is something else still background printing.

Jonathan -

Thanks to you and everyone else who responded. I guess I'll keep
background saves off. I keep my autorecover set to about 15 minutes, but
I'm pretty much of a fanatic on saving myself anyway.

If the document is large and the background save hasn't completed, the user
does some more edits, decides to exit Word, answers Yes to save the changes
a problem can occur. The user will get a little confused with the message
that word is trying to save a document that is already open. The fix is to
either wait for the background save to finish before exiting, or turn it off
altogether.

To get rid of the problems with background/fast saves and AutoRecovery, we
turn them all off and educate our users to save regularly or lose stuff at
their own risk. AutoRecover is a nice idea, but it doesn't work in some
instances.

I just checked on my Mac (Word 98) and found a blank space where the
Background Saves option is in Word 97 PC! Another example of Microsoft's
compatibility.
