History of a Word Document

I need to find out if a person who says they were working on a Word document
at a certain date and time. Is there anyway of doing this without version
control?

Is there a way then of seeing whether this person was actually logged onto
the computer on that day?

The Event Viewer in System Tools shows logons, I believe.
